A “United Airlines” aircraft was forced to make an emergency landing after a rabbit got into one of its engines, causing a fire immediately after takeoff.
The incident occurred when Flight UA 2325 took off from Denver Airport en route to Edmonton, Canada. Footage showed the moment the engine caught fire shortly after takeoff.
Passengers experienced panic as they heard a “loud explosion” and felt “intense shaking.” According to one passenger, Scott Wolff, “there were continuous explosions coming from the engine, and then the fire started. People began to panic.”
However, the Boeing 737-800 managed to make a safe emergency landing on the runway just minutes after takeoff.
After landing, the pilots requested a fire inspection of the engine and were later informed that a rabbit had been sucked into engine number two. “A rabbit in engine number two… that explains it,” the pilot was heard saying in the audio communications.
All 153 passengers and six crew members were transported to Edmonton on another aircraft.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has launched an investigation into the incident. According to the FAA, animal strikes are common, with over 20,000 cases reported last year in the U.S. alone. However, rabbit strikes are extremely rare – only four have been recorded nationwide, including one in Denver.
